Why Is My Furnace Not Heating? 7 Things to Check
Before you call for service, a few simple checks can solve the problem — or help you explain it.
Request an HVAC technician1. Thermostat
Set to Heat, above room temperature, with fresh batteries if it uses them.
2. Filter
A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut off. See furnace filters.
3. Power
Check the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch) and the breaker.
4. Furnace door
The furnace may not run if the access panel is not closed properly.
5. Vents
Make sure supply vents and returns are open.
6. Gas
If you smell gas, leave and call FortisBC or 911 from outside.
7. When to call
If these checks do not help. See furnace repair.
